The foundation of al-Mansur’s ‘Round City’ in 762 was a glorious milestone in the history of urban design. It developed into the cultural centre of the world

Contrary to popular belief, Baghdad is old but not ancient. Founded in AD762 by the Abbasid caliph al-Mansur “The Victorious” as the new seat of his Islamic empire, in Mesopotamian terms it is more arriviste than grande dame – an upstart compared to Nineveh, Ur and Babylon (seventh, fourth and third millennium BC respectively).

NO STATE FOR MUSLIM LEADERS?

By Jyoti Punwani, Mumbai Mirror | Feb 28, 2016, 12.00 AM IST

The Maharashtra government has no Muslim in its recent list of personalities whose anniversaries are worth commemorating. Ironically, journalist and retired Indian Oil trade unionist Feroze Ashraf has already found 22.

At the top of Ashraf's list is Amir Khusro, "the greatest Indian ever". "To call him a Muslim would be to lessen his personality. There hasn't been another poet who has written so lovingly about his country. And writing was just one of his many talents. Forget Maharashtra. The Government of India should honour him.''
